About Masseria del Pino Super Luna
This is not the first time we have met a couple who left their normal life in the city to devote themselves fully to the vineyard and wine. However, what is most surprising about Federica and Cesare is that, when they left their life in Catania in 2005, their jobs had nothing to do with viticulture or enology. She was an archery teacher and he was an airline pilot. So when they bought a small 1.7ha estate on the slopes of Mount Etna, in Randazzo (SIcilia), in search of a simple, quiet and industrious lifestyle, they applied this same philosophy to each of the wines they now make under the name Masseria del Pino. These are small natural productions that reflect the holistic and symbiotic life in nature.
Masseria del Pino Super Luna is an example of these pure expertise. An unusual rosé wine literally born out of the ashes high on the north face of Mount Etna, 800 metres above sea level. The vineyards are up to 120 years old and planted with the Nerelllo Cappuccio and Nerello Mascalese local varieties, and biodiversity is key, with animals, fruit trees, olive and walnut trees all playing a part here. The vineyards are treated with love, care and attention as if it were a simple extended garden. They use ancient organic and biodynamic practices with the utmost respect for each individual vine. Harvesting takes place just before dusk on a full moon, hence the name of the wine, and once the grapes reach the winery, they are destemmed and left to macerate in wooden crates for about an hour. Pressing is then carried out in the old palmento (a stone jar used to crush the grapes with the feet). Finally, the must is placed into barrels and fermentation begins naturally with native yeasts.
Federica and Cesare present Masseria del Pino Super Luna as a result of that simple life that many of us long for. A holistic rosé wine made in the heart of Etna with a production of only around 800 bottles. Authentic volcanic purity.
