About Artadi Terreras

As in other prestigious wine regions like Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne, Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, manager of the Artadi winery in Rioja, works hard to offer consumers wines that reflect the authenticity and diversity of different parts of La Rioja. According to this project, a denomination of origin as big as the D.O.Ca. Rioja cannot fully explore these differences that are enriching and full of things to say. For this reason they don’t want their wines to be included in the denomination’s official classification.

An example of this is their Artadi Terreras, a 100% Tempranillo red wine that comes from two plots planted in 1960 and 1982 and that, through organic cultivation, fights against the devastating advance of industrialisation. The harvest is carried out manually and selectively in 15 kg boxes and vinification takes place in open wooden vats for 10 and 12 days with two daily pressings and small pump overs. The wine is then placed in new French oak barrels, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation and is aged for 12 months.

Artadi Terreras is a village wine that is full of personality and great fruitiness. A wine that is perfect for enjoying straight away or leaving a while and experiencing the expression of the vintage in later years.

2017 In terms of climate, the 2017 vintage began with a winter of mild temperatures and moderate rainfall, followed by a spring with average rain and higher temperatures than usual, which favoured early sprouting. Like many wineries in the area, this vintage was marked by the fateful night of April 28, when temperatures dropped drastically causing frosts of catastrophic consequences. This frost, fortunately, had different effects on the crop, depending on the orography and the phenolic state of the vineyard. This way, in Artadi vineyard, the impact caused a 20-25% reduction of the harvest. In months following the frost, the weather conditions were frankly beneficial for the recovery of the vineyard, with temperatures and rains higher to the average in the region. Thus allowed harvesting with almost imperceptible phenolic differences. As Carlos López de Lacalle tells us, a great vintage that has managed to make adversity an occasion of virtue.
