About Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot
If you are a red wine lover, and you love discovering new territories and bargains, put this name on your list: A.O.C. Saint-Joseph. Just north of the Rhône Valley, in the southeast of France, lies this area where they make really interesting red wines at a very affordable price. It used to be the A.O.C. Coronas that was best known for this; however, this denomination has now been overtaken by this other area where the granitic soils offer some of the best bargains. Michel Chapoutier didn’t want to be left out of this new trend, happening in the same place he produces Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot.
These plots have joined the collection that Chapoutier really loves in France where, with his unusual selection of vineyards, he showcases the country’s most interesting corners and vineyards. Just like a photographer, Chapoutier showcases a specific image or snapshot of a terroir on each of his bottles. He is not alone in his work on this, rather he works with Yannick Alléno, another great wine enthusiast, and three Michelin-starred chef, who helps him select these wines.
Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot was born in the plot of the same name, where granitic sands stand out. In total there are several hectares (not many) of old vineyards aged over 30 years old growing on the slopes, facing southeast, and completely exposed to the well-known Mistral wind. This cold air flow can freeze the vines, leaving them without leaves or fruit, or it can help control humidity and fungal diseases at specific times of the year. In all of these vineyards, Syrah is biodynamically cultivated in a way that is completely respectful of the environment and the ecosystem.
Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot is harvested by hand and vinified in wooden tanks. The fermentation of this red wine takes place in this noble material and will spend about three weeks here exposed to the action of the yeasts and pumping over. Once that process has finished, Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot goes onto age in concrete vats. This change of material happens in order to maintain the mineral expression of this wine as much as possible.

2021 | All black and purple. Don’t be fooled by the dark colour of Alléno & Chapoutier Croix de Chabot 2021, as this is a flavoursome, smooth and tremendously rich red. The nose is very intense and complex, with fine nuances and variations ranging from black fruits, to spices (liquorice), to mineral and smoky notes. The palate is structured and full-bodied, with powerful tannins. Well balanced. Fresh and pleasant finish. |
